The documented history of the Indian subcontinent began in the second millennium BCE and is still going strong after almost four thousand years.
Until recently my main interest has been in the political history of late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth century and more broadly in the Indian renaissance and independence movement. I have written three books on these subjects: India’s Freedom Struggle (1988), The Bomb in Bengal (1992), and Nationalism, Terrorism, Communalism (1997). At present I have turned most of my attention to historiography and the global history of ideas.
